Confidence rating:

Walton's fortune is derived from a calculated 4 percent stake in Wal-Mart. The shares are controlled through the Walton Family Holdings Trust as well as Bentonville, Arkansas-based Walton Enterprises, the family's closely held holding company. He's credited with a third of the shares, which were held by the estate of his late father, John T. Walton, the second son of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton.

The size of his inheritance is based on on Wyoming court documents that were unsealed in November 2015, a decade after his father's death. Half of his father's estate was placed in charitable trusts and his mother, Christy, inherited the balance. Share information is based on the company's 2017 proxy and Form 4 SEC filings.

The unsealed court documents include the couple's 1982 premarital agreement, asset values at the time of Walton's marriage and death, and a declaration of how he wanted the inheritance to be split. They show that Lukas is the sole beneficiary of any remaining principal in five charitable trusts that were established in his father's will. Tax returns for them indicate investment performance exceeds the amount they spend on charitable giving. The trusts expire in 2036. The billionaire isn't credited with these as he can't access the funds for another 21 years.

He owns 22 percent of energy company First Solar, according to the company's 2017 proxy. He has an 8 percent interest in family-owned Arvest Bank that's valued using the average price-to-book value multiple of four publicly traded peer companies: First Midwest Bancorp, MB Financial, PrivateBancorp and UMB Financial.

The value of his cash investments is based on an analysis of his dividend income, insider transactions, taxes, market performance and philanthropy.

Kiki McLean, a spokeswoman for the Walton family, declined to comment on the net worth calculation.
