The majority of Lin's fortune is derived from his 64% stake from Chinalin Securities, a broker and investment advisory service provider in China.

Lin was born in May 1963 in Zijin, China.

He graduated from Hubei University of Technology and started his career in the banking industry in the 1970s. Lin worked as an accountant at a branch of China Agricultural Bank in Guangdong and later became chief of a Bank of China branch in 1993.

Lin founded Shenzhen Liye Group in May 1995 as the sole owner of the group with his mother. He became chairman of Chinalin Securities, a publicly traded broker, in October 2014, according to a bond prospectus in 2018.
