Kevin Plank was born to William and Jayne Plank, the youngest of five boys, and grew up in Kensington, Maryland. He attended St. John's College High School in Washington D.C and Fork Union Military Academy. He graduated in business administration from the University of Maryland in 1996 and played as a walk-on football player there. His first business venture was an on-campus rose delivery service called "Cupid's Valentine."

As a football player, he disliked how the t-shirts he wore would become soaked with sweat and saw the need for one that would stay dry. He found a fabric that would wick away moisture and using seed money he earned from his campus business, started Under Armour in his grandmother's basement at age 23. He approached Sal Fasciana, owner of a clothing factory in Bellaire, Ohio, to make and ship his first products.

He then turned to friends from high school and university who had become professional football players to help sell his athletic wear and received his first order from the Georgia State football team in 1996, and from the Miami Dolphins a year later. Plank was quoted in the Harvard Business Review in November 2010 that the most prominent athlete to promote his product was NFL quarterback Tom Brady.

He lives in Maryland with his wife Desiree Jacqueline and son James.
