John Sall was born in Rockford, Illinois, in 1948. He received a bachelor's degree in history from Beloit College in Wisconsin and a master's degree in economics from Northern Illinois University. Sall subsequently enrolled in a statistics PhD program at North Carolina State University, where he met James Goodnight, a professor.

Sall joined Goodnight and two others in founding SAS in 1976. Created as an analytics specialist for big pharmaceutical and agriculture businesses, the Cary, North Carolina-based company now provides business intelligence software and services to a broad client base, including utilities, communications companies, schools, banks and casinos. The company had $3.24 billion of revenue in 2017.

Sall is married with four children.
