Born in 1954, Wang Jian graduated from Hunan Medical University in 1979. He received a masters degree from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, and did post doctoral studies at the University of Texas and the University of Iowa from 1988 to 1990, according to the company's website.

Wang worked as a senior researcher at the University of Washington for four years since 1990 and returned to China to set up a biotech company in 1994. He participated in a global human genome project in 1999, and later co-founded BGI Genomics.

Wang ascended the summit of Mount Everest together with Wang Shi, chairman of Chinese developer Vanke in 2010, according to the company's website.

BGI Genomics became publicly traded in the Shenzhen stock exchange in July 2017.
