The majority of Zhou's fortune is derived from a 23.4 percent stake in Qihoo 360 Technology, a publicly-traded software company with about 500 million users in China.

He controls the stake directly and through holding companies Tianjin Qixin Zhicheng Technology and Tianjin Zhongxin Investment, according to the company's January 2018 acquisition proposal.

The value of his cash investments is based on an analysis of dividends, insider transactions, taxes and market performance. A $709 million loan facility associated with the 2016 privatization of Qihoo is considered as part of the analysis.

Yue Jing, a spokesperson for Qihoo 360, declined to comment on the net worth calculation in February.
