Overview

Li is the founder and chairman of Hanergy Thin Film Power Group, China's biggest solar manufacturer by market value. The Beijing-based company makes thin-film power modules and builds solar farms. Hanergy has been expanding overseas through acquisitions. Almost all of its $408 million of sales in the six months ended June 2014 comes from related companies.

Li was born in Heyuan city in southern Chinese province of Guangdong in 1967. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University in the Chinese capital city in 1988. After graduating, he sold electronics before setting up a transportation company. He founded Hanergy Holding Group, a clean energy power generation company in 1994. Hangery listed its solar unit on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange after acquiring a majority stake in Apollo Solar Energy, six years later.

He is known as a philanthropist, serving as the initiator and executive director of China Red Ribbon Foundation, a charity dedicated to HIV control and prevention. Hanergy also co-founded the "Raising Them Up" program for young talents from poor families in July, 2013.

In his book "New Energy Revolution: The Power to Change China and the World" released in November 2013, Li offers his suggestions on China's sustainable development and peaceful rise through solving energy shortage problems by developing a photovoltaic industry.
