The majority of Goldschmeding's fortune is derived from a 35 percent stake in Randstad Holding. He holds shares through Randstad Beheer, a holding company based in Laren, the Netherlands, according to the 2016 annual report. Randstad is the world's second biggest staffing and recruitment firm, according to an Aug. 18, 2016 press release from Staffing Industry Analysts. 

The 2016 annual report puts Goldschmeding's shareholding at between 30 and 40 percent. This analysis had used 33 percent prior to April 25, 2017 when it was adjusted to the middle of the provided range because the other figure could not be confirmed.

The value of the billionaire's cash investments is based on an analysis of dividends, taxes and market performance.

Saskia Huuskes, a spokesperson for Randstad, declined to confirm Goldschmeding's shareholding beyond the 30 percent to 40 percent guidance provided in the 2016 annual report.

Frits Goldschmeding was born in Amsterdam in 1933. He co-founded employment agency Randstad with fellow economics student Ger Daleboudt in 1960, while studying at Amsterdam's Vrije University. The two came up with the idea for the business as they were cycling back from a fraternity party at 2:00 a.m. They established their first office in their dorm room.

By the time Goldschmeding stepped down as president and chief executive officer in 1998, Randstad had 1,000 offices. The company acquired competitor Vedior for $5.1 billion in 2007, to become the world's second-largest staffing provider. The billionaire retired from the company's board of directors in 2011. Goldschmeding is married with three children, and lives in Laren, the Netherlands.
