Biography

Birthdate: 1946
Family: Married, 3 children
Education: University of Notre Dame, Bachelor's Degree

DeBartolo was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1946. He is the son of development magnate Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., who helped invent the suburban shopping mall.

DeBartolo worked at the family business after graduating from Notre Dame in 1968. His father bought the San Francisco 49ers in 1977 and awarded him the franchise, making him the youngest owner in the NFL at age 30. The team would win five Super Bowl titles between 1981 and 1994, a record number for a single team owner.

The younger DeBartolo led the initial public offering of DeBartolo Realty Corporation shortly before his father's death in 1994. The REIT was acquired by Simon Property Group for nearly $1.5 billion in 1996, with the family taking a stake in the new company.

DeBartolo pled guilty to a felony charge of concealing an extortion plot by the former governor of Louisiana, who aimed to license a riverboat casino, in 1998. He stepped down as owner of the 49ers in 1997, and officially ceded control to his sister in 2000.

He went on to found DeBartolo Holdings, a closely held investment company, in 2002. After three failed attempts, DeBartolo was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in February. He lives with his wife and family in Tampa, Florida.
