Confidence rating:

The majority of Friedkin's fortune is derived from his ownership of Gulf States Toyota, a Houston-based auto distributor with more than 150 dealerships in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana, according to its website.

The closely held company doesn't disclose financials and had revenue of $8.4 billion in 2015, according to the Houston Chronicle, which publishes an annual ranking of Houston's largest private companies. It's valued using the average enterprise value-to-sales, enterprise value-to-Ebitda and price-to-earnings multiples of three publicly traded peer companies: Delek Automotive Systems, Carasso Motors and Uni-Select.

The valuation was updated on June 8, 2017 to credit Friedkin with full ownership of Gulf States Toyota following the death of his father, Thomas Freidkin, in March 2017. He was previously credited with half of the company based on a 2004 lawsuit that described him and his father as joint owners.

The Friedkin family owns several other closely held assets through the Friedkin Group. Most don't disclose financial information and aren't included in the net worth calculation. Dan Friedkin is credited with the full value of Gulf States Toyota to reflect his status as chairman and chief executive.

He also bought a hotel in Aspen, which is valued at its February 2015 purchase price, according to the Aspen Times.

Friedkin declined to comment on his net worth, according to Phoenix, Arizona-based external spokesman Brent Diggins who works at Allison PR.
