Biography

Birthdate: 1951
Family: Unmarried, No children

Augusto Perfetti was born in Lainate, Italy in 1951. His father, Ambrogio, and an uncle, Egidio, had started a candy workshop called Dolcifico Lombardo five years before his birth. His father Ambrogio and uncle, Egidio had set up a candy workshop called Dolcifico Lombardo five decades earlier in 1946.

The brothers decided to produce chewing gums in the 1950s, creating the country's first brand of chewing gum, Brooklyn, that featured the iconic bridge that links the New York City borough to Manhattan on the wrapper. The company also produced the bubble gim Big Babol, liquorice gummy candies called Morositas, and Vivident chewing gum.

Egidio Perfetti was kidnapped by a gang in 1975, and was released a few days later. After a second kidnapping attempt in 1979, which was foiled, the family decamped to Switzerland. Control of the company passed to Augusto and his elder brother Giorgio after their father’s death in 1989. Their uncle, Egidio, died two years later without any heirs.

Perfetti acquired a 37 percent stake of Van Melle, the Breda, Netherlands-based maker of Mentos, in 1991. It bought the rest of the company for $649 million a decade later. Perfetti Van Melle acquired Chupa Chups, the Spanish lollipop maker whose logo was designed by Salvador Dali, in 2006.
