Biography

Birthdate: 6/4/1959
Family: Married, 2 children
Education: 1983, Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania, MBA University of Mumbai, Science, Bachelor's Degree

Father Dhirubhai Ambani got his start as a clerk at the trading company A. Besse & Co. in Aden, Turkey. He struck out on his own trading spices and yarn to Yemen in 1958, and eventually built Reliance Industries into a fabrics, textiles and energy empire. The company, which held its initial public offering in India in 1997, often held its annual meetings in stadiums.

Anil Ambani joined Reliance after completing his MBA at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School in 1983. He helped raise $9 billion to pay for petrochemical and refining plants, selling debt to overseas and local investors. Dhirubhai died of a stroke in 2002 without leaving a will, causing a fraternal feud between Anil and brother Mukesh. Three years later, in a settlement brokered by their mother, the brothers split the family business. Mukesh retained control over refining, petrochemicals, oil and gas and textiles operations while Anil took the telecommunications, asset management, entertainment and power generation businesses. The duo dissolved their noncompete pacts and settled a legal dispute over sharing natural gas in 2010. Three years later, the brothers announced a $220 million pact to share a fiber-optic network, their first deal since splitting the Reliance business empire.

Anil's Reliance Power raised $3 billion in 2008, in what was India's then-biggest initial public offering. A year later, an alleged attempt to sabotage Anil's helicopter was uncovered after a mechanic found sand and pebbles stuffed into an engine intake, which could have caused a crash. The mechanic, Bharat Borge, was later found dead in an apparent suicide on a railway line near Mumbai.

Anil, who is married to former Bollywood actress Tina Munim, invested $325 million in Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks Studios in 2009 through Reliance Entertainment.

In January 2011, Anil and several directors of his companies paid a fine of $11 million to the Securities & Exchange Board of India, the nation's financial regulator, to settle an investigation that they violated overseas borrowing rules. The settlement was without admission or denial of guilt. The regulator also asked him to avoid trading equities until the end of 2011.
