Biography

Birthdate: 11/9/1920
Family: Married, 5 children

Born in 1920, Faria studied medicine at Minas Gerais Federal University in southeastern Brazil. He completed post-graduate work at Chicago's Northwestern University, and practiced gastroenterology for two years. In the late 1940s, when his father died of pneumonia, Faria took over the small lender he had founded. He built it into what became known as Banco Real, before selling the bank to ABN Amro in 1998 for $2.1 billion. As part of the deal, he held on to Real's investment-banking assets, which now operate as Alfa.

Over the years, Faria diversified into a range of businesses, including the Transamerica hotel chain, founded in 1972; ice cream maker La Basque, in 1980; palm-oil producer Agropalma, in 1982; New York-based Delta National Bank, in 1986; and home-improvement chain C&C, in 2000, among others. He's donated millions of reais to hospitals in Brazil.

At his ranch near Sao Paulo, Faria owns more than 100 Arabian horses, which he has mixed with the local Pampa breed. He also raises prize milk cows.
