Confidence rating:

The majority of Bailleres's fortune is controlled through Grupo Bal, a closely held investment company based in Mexico City. His most valuable asset is a 69 percent stake in Industrias Penoles, the world's largest producer of refined silver according to the Silver Institute's 2016 survey. His stake is held directly and through Grupo Bal. Penoles, in turn, controls a 77 percent stake in Fresnillo, a Mexican gold producer.

His other publicly traded investments include a 98 percent stake in Grupo Palacio de Hierro, the upscale department store operator; majority stakes in two insurance companies, Grupo Profuturo and Grupo Nacional Provincial; and a minority stake in Femsa, the publicly traded holding company for Latin America's largest Coca-Cola bottler in 2015 by revenue, according to Bloomberg data. Grupo Profuturo and Grupo Nacional Provincial are recorded in the net worth analysis as private companies due to the stocks being thinly traded.

He controls a closely held asset-management company known as Valmex. Its valuation is based on the average price-to-book and price-to-earnings multiples of five publicly traded peer companies: AllianceBernstein Holding, Janus Capital Group, Corp Actinver, Bank of New York Mellon and Legg Mason.

Over the past decade, Bailleres has received more than $2 billion in dividend income, mostly from Penoles. The value of cash investments is based on an analysis of dividend income and market performance, and includes smaller closely held assets, such as his bull- and horse-raising businesses.

A spokesperson for Bailleres declined to comment on his net worth.
