State-by-State visualizes current and historical economic data and analytics about the U.S. Based on the Economic Health Index, State-by-State includes the latest state unemployment numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (updated monthly), as well as state data on housing, health care, energy production, demographics and more. General election polling data from RealClearPolitics will also be included through the 2012 presidential election.

The unemployment rate is defined as the percent of the labor force that is unemployed. People are classified as unemployed if they do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the prior four weeks, and are currently available for work.
The data on unemployment were collected as part of the Current Population Survey (CPS), a monthly sample survey of about 60,000 households that obtains employment information among the nation’s civilian noninstitutionalized population aged 16 and over. The unemployment rate is updated monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Workforce in government is defined as the percent of employees on nonfarm payrolls who are employed by the government.
The data on workforce in government were collected as part of the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program, a monthly survey of about 141,000 businesses and government agencies, in order to provide detailed industry data on employment, hours and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls. The workforce data are updated monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
