The unemployment rate is defined as the percent of the labor force that is unemployed. People are classified as unemployed if they do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the prior four weeks, and are currently available for work.
The data on unemployment were collected as part of the Current Population Survey (CPS), a monthly sample survey of about 60,000 households that obtains employment information among the nation’s civilian noninstitutionalized population aged 16 and over. The unemployment rate is updated monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
