Unemployment Rate

  • Definition

    The unemployment rate is defined as the percent of the labor force that is unemployed. People are classified as unemployed if they do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the prior four weeks, and are currently available for work.

  • Methodology & Source

    The data on unemployment were collected as part of the Current Population Survey (CPS), a monthly sample survey of about 60,000 households that obtains employment information among the nation’s civilian noninstitutionalized population aged 16 and over. The unemployment rate is updated monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Median Household Income

  • Definition

    Median household income is defined as the median value of all household incomes. Household income is the combined earnings of all household earners aged 15 and older during the preceding calendar year.

  • Methodology & Source

    Data on median household income were collected as part of the Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the Current Population Survey, a nationwide survey designed to provide communities with demographic, social, economic and housing data. It is conducted by personal and telephone interviews in February, March and April, and has an annual sample size of about 100,000 addresses across the U.S. The data have been adjusted for inflation using the 2011 average Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers. The data on median household income are updated annually by the U.S. Census Bureau.
