Sept. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Bloomberg View columnist Margaret Carlson and Tom Carroll, president & CEO at TBWA\\Worldwide, examine the filibuster by Texas Senator Ted Cruz over defunding Obamacare as part of the battle over the debt ceiling and the level of support he is receiving from Senate Republicans. They speak on Bloomberg Television’s “Bloomberg Surveillance.”

Filibuster?

Theoretically, and when there is -- when they are feeling in hollywood mode like jimmy stewart, people were excited by rand paul's filibuster.

It was the first time in a long time.

As it went on and on -- 12 hours, 52 minutes.

It is late, after dinner, all the senators are coming to the floor to support him.

It was thrilling.

It was not in a bad cause, clearing up how we are going to use drones and whether john brennan was -- this filibuster is a lonely last stand for senator cruz on obamacare.

Where watching this continue.

You get these tiny breaks, and he is taking advantage of it, but you talk about -- after a few hours in washington under stress, you always get to a nazi holocaust reference, which he got to.

So i like the dr.

Seuss, we can stay away from -- sara, do you have the numbers to help us?

By 6:00 a.m., he had spoken for more than 15 hours, the eighth longest filibuster since recordkeeping began in 1900. these have gone as long as 24 hours, 18 minutes.

That goes back to strom thurmond in the civil rights bill in 1957. -- in 1967. the difference with "green eggs and ham" is that when americans discovered they did not like green eggs and ham, they did not like obamacare it are.

They did not like obamacare in a fox, in a house, or in aim -- or with a mouse.

So he ad-libbed a little bit there.

Maybe that is the problem, that people outside d.c. do not like the government growing.

There are few things in washington that excite people outside washington.

They are mostly in despair.

I look at this junior senator from texas.

He has an angle.

You just stated it is a lonely crusade.

How does mr.

Mcconnell and mr.

Weiner react -- mr.

Boehner react?

They wish he would disappear.

He has senator mike lee and senator marco rubio.

He is missing some of the liens like senator tom coburn, who is a roommate of senator mike lee.

They live in that house on capitol hill that we hear about from time to time.

They are roommates, and senator tom coburn said i cannot find your letter, senator mike lee, and i do not support the filibuster.

Tom, you are coming at it from a business world.

You are the ceo of an advertising company.

You look at these shenanigans, a few days into a government shutdown and a few weeks into a possible debt default -- what are your thoughts?

I think it is absurd.

The american people are just totally disgusted with it but do not know what to do.

If i was going to give him any advice, i would say look at this new pope, this guy who has said the rhetoric, we are here to serve, i am here to serve and help people and i should get the rhetoric which decided we should focus on the matter.

There is a guy who leads a lot of people more than any of these politicians lead, and the guy has the right priority, and we should look at him and say this is an example of what leadership is.

He's bringing that kind of attention to himself, possibly running in 2016. a law professor said he is one of the smartest kids in the room.

He started out in a high school in a debating society with extracurricular activity where you memorize the bill of rights and learn how to debate and he went around texas as kind of an after dinner show, debating the constitution.

And no one beat him.

He is extreme a smart.

But smart is not wise.

Terrific perspective.

Margaret carlson, we will continue this discussion.

Harvard carlson and tom carol with us.

The company is moving toward a listing in new york.
