Nov. 6 (Bloomberg) -- At up to $40,000 per patient, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, or IMRT, is one of the most profitable prostate cancer treatments for urologists, while not necessarily the most effective, according to several medical studies. One in five urologists now boost their income by billing for the therapy, according to a survey by the Urology Times. Bloomberg's Kevin Thrash reports on some urologists in Monterey County, California, who are being investigated by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for possibly putting profits ahead of patients.
