Dec. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Police shot and killed Michael Mahoney, 36, nine days after he had spent 45 hours in a psychiatric center. His family believes the brevity of the stay left him agitated and delusional and contributed to his death. While there is no accurate count of people with mental-health issues shot by police in the U.S., a Bloomberg investigation found Mahoney is one of 64 people with a diagnosed mental illness who were fatally shot or tasered by police in 2012.
