Pretty hefty donation.

What is it you can accomplish with this?

We have been working with building technology for decades, and it is used in almost every business and almost every government agency.

Not only in our country, but around the world.

We are challenged by getting new workers to work in this field.

One of the big goals, as we have seen, is, as we announced this morning, to get this kind of technology into k -- 12 schools.

This is going to have a huge impact at -- these are public schools?



What will the goal be in kindergarten in terms of what students can be learning in terms of stanem?

The pedagogy people tell us that about the fourth grade is when kids really kick in with spatial learning.

It is a stretch to say k-12th grade, but people do start to organize themselves and organize their minds at an early age, but these new digital technology will allow kids to do community-based projects and learned a kind of raw check-based version of stan -- project-based version of stem.

Take for example kids in detroit.

They were early users of this.

One of the kids had a sibling who got sick with lead poisoning, so the teacher said, "why don't you map it out?" they mapped out where the lead poisoning was and realized it was related to project housing, and they made a project called get the lead out, about getting lead poisoning out of dilapidated housing, and the city council supported this activity with summer employment of these kids.

They all learned computing and learned civic engagement.

They learned some levels of science, and those kids went on to university of michigan, got degrees, some of them, in geography.

We have this in literally hundreds of schools now.

When i met with the president, he said, "why don't we scale it up?

What we do every kid, every teacher, every school being able to access this kind of learning?" so i said, "let's do it.

So here we are.

How long before schools and students start to see the effect of this money?

It will take years to evolve, but it will kick in as an opportunity for any teacher in america to start using it in the fall.

We are doing teacher workshops this summer, teaching them how to think geographically, how to integrate it into the curriculum, how to learn the basic technology, but kids pick it up.

This generation of kids are just amazing in terms of their mines being able to measure things . they bring these maps together, they mash them up, they talk about it.

I am thrilled at this idea to bring this mapping and analytics skill to these kids.

I think it is going to change the way people learn.

You heard me say as we came into year that we are 45th in terms of our ranking, and it does not look like that number is going to improve anytime soon.

How do we change that?

I was not a very good student, but i found something that i love.

Once i found that i love something, nothing could stop me from learning.

I finally went to harvard, but in high school, you never would have picked it, because i found something i loved.

Introducing this kind of interactive mapping, geographic analysis to kids and communities, our score rate in terms of kids and performing from east l.a. to suburban virginia has just been amazing.

I am very hopeful that this will make a huge difference in the way kids learn.

They will be motivated, and then they will go on to do what they love.

We hope indeed they do.
