July 11 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Marines and Japanese Self-Defense Forces participate in amphibious assault and integration drills, and Japanese Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) landings at Camp Pendleton and San Clemente Island, California, in June. The two-week “Dawn Blitz” joint drills were designed to teach Japanese troops how to recapture territory in the face of enemy fire. The operations reflect interest on the part of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party in developing a Marine corps to counter what Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government says is Chinese attempts to change the status quo in maritime disputes.
