Founder David Griswold thinks of Sustainable Harvest as both a for-profit coffee importer and an international development organization. The company buys from collectives that represent 200,000 coffee farmers around the world and sells to roasters, including large companies such as Whole Foods, Green Mountain Coffee (GMCR), and Peet's Coffee. With offices in coffee-exporting regions such as Mexico, Peru, and Tanzania, Griswold, 48, says Sustainable Harvest aims to bridge the gap between growers and roasters through what he calls "relationship coffee." It uses profits to train farmers to grow better coffee and understand the market, which makes them more competitive and raises their income. Each year the company brings together farmers, roasters, bankers, and development organizations in a forum to share strategies for the coffee industry and development. Sustainable Harvest also works with foundations and nongovernmental organizations to improve infrastructure, health, and social services in its growers' communities.
