Engineering firm IndiKar, based in Wilkau-Hasslau, made waves at this year's Frankfurt Auto Show when it unveiled an electric-powered remake of the Trabant, the boxy, smoke-spewing car produced in East Germany from 1957 to 1991. Nostalgia for the old "Trabi" runs high—especially now, as Germany prepares to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Still in prototype, the Trabant nT could go to market as early as 2012 if IndiKar and co-developer Herpa are able to attract the right investors. IndiKar managing director Ronald Gerschewski fondly remembers driving a Trabi during his university days in the former East Berlin. "It's a historic car, and due for a comeback," he says.
