Lagos Dumpsites

Location: Lagos, Nigeria
Size: 9,000 tons of municipal solid waste per day
Type of garbage: Municipal solid waste and electronic waste
Health implications: When burned, noxious fumes from e-waste can cause respiratory illnesses.

Lagos generates about 9,000 tons of municipal solid waste per day. In addition, the Basel Action Network estimates that 500 shipping containers arrive at the port each month, and up to 75% of it is e-waste. E-waste is not allowed in the landfills, but it gets dumped around the city. Electronics, shipped from developed countries, are a significant health problem for the area. Toxins released while stripping the computers for precious metals can cause respiratory problems, birth defects, and cancer.
