John Lennon

Date of Death: Dec. 8, 1980
Age: 40
Cause of death: Homicide
Album sales (since 1991): 4.4 million (Solo); 57.6 million (The Beatles)
Highest-charting album (post death): No. 1 - 1980, Double Fantasy (John Lennon/Yoko Ono)

John Lennon's Double Fantasy album, released weeks before his death, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and included the No. 1 hit, (Just Like) Starting Over. Another album of songs recorded during the Double Fantasy sessions was released in 1984 under the title Milk and Honey. Although Lennon's solo records have sold well, The Beatles catalog, which Michael Jackson bought in 1985 for $47.5 million, is the real cash cow. The Beatles albums, which will be rereleased this fall in fully remastered form, have sold nearly 58 million since 1991.
