While consumers have cut back on outside entertainment such as going out on the town, they haven't necessarily slashed alcohol consumption. Instead folks are increasingly enjoying their spirits at home, much to the benefit of liquor stores. Alcohol Commissions across the country are reporting a surge in the sale of wine and spirits. According to the Michigan Labor & Economic Growth Dept., the state's liquor sales have increased for the past two fiscal years. The Ohio Commerce Dept.'s Liquor Control Div. reported that sales of spirits hit a record of $719.2 million last year. Jim Dombroski, owner of Broad Street Mini Mart in Conneaut, Ohio, told the Star Beacon: "We're fortunate that we're not like a lot of areas of the economy that have taken a bigger hit."
