With domestic growth of U.S. social networking sites leveling off, Facebook and News Corp. (NWS)-owned MySpace are focusing on global expansion. For Facebook, that means offering translation tools that let users customize the site in their native tongue. MySpace has opened 18 overseas offices focused on developing local-language versions in markets with the most moneymaking potential.
The U.S.-based sites have more than each other to contend with. In at least six major markets, native competitors such as France's SkyRock and Spain's Tuenti are leading the Western sites in traffic, suggesting that local ties and entrenched user bases might prove most valuable in the international race for best business model.
In this slide show, we highlight 10 Web sites in 10 countries that are vying to protect their turf against Facebook and MySpace. We compare each site's unique monthly visitors with those of Facebook and MySpace, using November 2008 figures from researcher comScore (SCOR). These numbers do not necessarily reflect the number of registered users on each site.
