In January 2007, Winfrey cut the ribbon on the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, a boarding school she funded and helped build in South Africa. The $40 million school’s first years have been tumultuous, but the Oprah Winfrey brand is strong. Her Angel Network, which has raised more than $80 million, provides grants and support for charitable projects and non-profit organizations. The network is also involved in building schools in underdeveloped rural areas. This year, Winfrey gave nearly $3 million to the Angel Network and the Leadership Academy.
