Powell, a 35-year veteran of military service, was the first African-American Secretary of State and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He became famous during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Powell's reputation was tarnished in the run-up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq when he delivered information to the U.N. that turned out to be false. He also has served on various corporate boards, including AOL's.
