iPhone 4

Date: June 24, 2010
Retail price: Starting at $199
Cost of components: $187.51

The estimated cost to build the iPhone 4 climbed by more than $8 over the previous iteration. Part of the increase came from rising cost of the display. At $28.50, it costs $12.50 more than the display on the last version, the iPhone 3GS, released in 2009. Another addition is the $2.60 gyroscope chip, supplied by Geneva-based STMicroelectronics. Other component costs fell. For instance, the capacitive glass that makes the iPhone’s display sensitive to touch cost $10, down from $16 last time around.
