The White House estimates that 30,000 teacher and school staff jobs may be eliminated, according to its website, while Education Secretary Arne Duncan put the total number at 40,000 in a White House briefing on Feb. 27. That cut would eliminate support for about 2,700 schools and 1.2 million disadvantaged students, he said.
