"Great Egret" (1821)

In his journals, Audubon said that the Egret was "the most difficult to imitate of any bird I have yet undertaken." The species, on the verge of extinction at the beginning of the 20th century, is now protected by conservation laws thanks to the efforts of the National Audubon Society.
