A boy trudges back to his village with harvest from his family's plot. His father trails behind, along a muddy road deeply rutted by logging trucks near Nguti. Logging trucks dig up the roads that local people have used for generations, making it difficult just to walk along them, let alone navigate them with a vehicle.

The small cacao farms that now lie between the reserves use the rain forest to shade their crop. Rather than clearing away trees, local farmers aim to preserve the forest canopy.
