Blaming the 13-Year-Old Victim

Some stories are difficult to talk about. This is one. It starts with a 13-year-old boy’s molestation in the back of an empty school bus. For the boy and his family, the torment had only just begun. The small Colorado town came together -- but not to support the victim. Instead, as in the better-known Steubenville rape case, the town blamed the victim and his family for causing trouble. Chris Staiti and Barry Bortnick make the case with hard data and heartbreaking detail that sexual abuse of boys has become part of the hazing ritual. And they show how, in at least one town, attackers get community service and victims get run out of town.
