I'll See Your $10,000 and Raise You a Yacht

Mitt Romney bet Rick Perry $10,000 when the Texas Governor challenged his position during a Republican primary debate in December 2011. The ease with which he made the wager reinforced the narrative that personal wealth made him blind to the plight of the nation's unemployed. The news media and Romney's rivals seized on the gaffe. Democratic National Committee spokesman Brad Woodhouse tweeted, "Nothing else he has said in this debate matters," and Perry released an ad that said, "One bet you can count on. ... The truth isn't for sale." Romney later said his wife, Ann, told him after the debate, "There are a lot of things you do well. Betting isn't one of them."
