Vice President Dan Quayle thought he was correcting a student in a sixth-grade spelling bee in New Jersey in 1992 for misspelling "potato." Quayle, who added an "e" to the end of the word, was the one who earned an F. The late-night cutups had a field day with the goof, which propelled the notion that Quayle was young, inexperienced and an intellectual lightweight.
