The MicroCHIPs is another implantable device--this one capable of delivering a daily dose of medicines and communicating wirelessly to allow data transmission and remote control. It is implanted under the skin in a simple outpatient procedure using local anesthesia, through a small incision. On Feb. 16, MicroCHIPS announced the results of its first successful human clinical trial, in which the device was used to provide daily doses to women with osteoporosis. The company plans to file for regulatory approval for its first microchip device in 2014.
