The timber industry already has a presence in the unprotected forests near Herakles Farms site. The selective cutting of valuable trees practiced here is less intensive than in some other parts of the world, allowing the forest to heal and return to something close to its natural state. Much of the forest is inaccessible except by foot and motorbike. Here the author's motorcycle driver poses next to a felled tree.

The Herakles project would be on a much bigger scale, clear-cutting swaths of forest and likely leaving the thin tropical soil to wash away, choking rivers with mud.
