The Most Artful Dodgers

In a series of stories about tax dodges, Bloomberg reporters have gone down the rabbit hole of tax planning. The types of trusts that Zachary Mider uncovered in this story, though they provide their creators with charitable deductions and are ostensibly public record, are so obscure that lawyers advised their clients that nobody was likely to find them through the IRS. In fact, Mider did, digging through arcane tax records to find the deliciously named “Jackie O. Trusts,” and reveal tax avoidance within America' wealthiest family: the Waltons, heirs to the Wal-Mart Stores Inc. fortune.
