Sugru Self-Setting Rubber

Favorited by Markus Freitag
Co-Founder of Freitag

Freitag was founded by two brothers who wanted to build a courier bag that would last a lifetime. It ended up in the design collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

Freitag bags are cut from the rugged tarps that serve as the outer shells of shipping trucks in Europe. The straps are made from recycled seat belts, and the edges are lined with discarded bicycle tubes. It comes as no surprise that one of Markus Freitag’s favorite things is a material.

Sugru has the consistency of playdough and hardens into a silicone rubber that can be used to fix electric chords, ice-climbing boots, tool handles and dishwasher racks. Eight packets sell for $18. Sugru’s utility, Freitag says, reminds people of “the importance in repairing things that may otherwise be discarded.”
