Cioppino at Dave's Grill

Montauk, New York

Summer in the Hamptons means plenty of options for the well-funded fish-lover. But East Enders in the know have been flocking to this seasonal (May–October) dockside spot since 1988. The seating policy is famously prickly: Dave’s accepts same-day reservations only, and they must be made by phone, beginning promptly at 4:15 p.m. Persistent callers who manage to nab a table can devour standard-bearing lobster rolls and simply grilled seafood hauled from the boats each morning. But the pro move here is the cioppino ($43)—a briny fish stew with historical roots in San Francisco’s Italian immigrant community. Along with flaky slabs of white fish and the catch of the day, Dave’s version offers plump scallops, clams and mussels, sweet hunks of lobster and shrimp, and tender squid rings poached in the creamy tomato-and-fish broth.
