DDG-51 Guided Missile Destroyer

Project cost: $87.3 billion

FY 2013 estimate: $3.6 billion

The DDG-51 is the Navy's primary destroyer. The 505-foot multi-mission warship uses an Aegis weapon system, including Tomahawk cruise missiles that can hit targets 1,000 miles away and Sea Sparrow anti-aircraft missiles whose range is classified, according to the Navy's website. The Aegis-class destroyers are part of the regional defense that President Barack Obama’s administration is deploying in the Middle East against Iran’s ballistic missiles.
