On "numbnuts"

"You have numbnuts like Reed Gusciora who put out a statement comparing me to George Wallace and Lester Maddox."

-- Jan. 30, 2012: Gusciora, a gay Democratic assembly member, along with civil rights leaders such as U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Georgia), criticized Christie for comments opposing same-sex marriage and proposing a referendum on the issue instead. "People would have been happy with a referendum on civil rights rather than fighting and dying in the streets of the South," Christie said on Jan. 24. Lewis said Christie "has not read his recent history books" on the civil rights movement. On Feb. 1, Christie said he regretted the comments, while refusing to apologize for his "numbnuts" insult.
