For those promoted to CEO internally, 46 percent were senior vice presidents, 23 percent were chief operating officers and 15 percent were chief financial officers. Chief technology officers and consultants each accounted for about 8 percent.
The order is somewhat flipped at Fortune 100 companies: 36 percent were chief operating officers, 24 percent were senior or executive VPs and 12 percent were chief financial officers.
Of all 135 tech CEOs analyzed, the average tenure in their current position was 4.2 years.
