Reactable Mobile

Maker: Reactable Systems
Based: Barcelona, Spain
Price: $10

Introduced for sale in 2010, this mobile app for smartphones and tablet computers is based on the Reactable, an instrument that a research team at the Pompeu Fabra University unveiled in 2005. The original Reactable was essentially a round table with sensors and a set of blocks in various shapes. The sensor read codes on the blocks, which could be moved around the table surface to control sounds and effects. "When Apple released the iPad, we [used it] to make the Reactable concepts available to a much broader market," says Reactable Systems Chief Executive Officer Gunter Geiger. "[It] didn't depend on specific hardware anymore."
