5. Small-Scale Hydropower

A Pakistani Kashmiri technician works at a hydro project in the mountainous Neelum Valley in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, in November. As Pakistan grapples with a crippling energy crisis, people in one corner of Kashmir have taken matters into their own hands, using small-scale turbines to generate electricity from streams and rivers. 

"Small hydro" includes water power projects that produce less than 50 megawatts. Some $7.6 billion was invested in small hydro last year.
