Searching for Smugglers
National Police troops patrol the Inirida River, on the lookout for tungsten ore smugglers coming from the FARC’s Tiger Hill mine. Their patrols don't travel more than a few kilometers outside Puerto Inirida, the provincial capital 160 kilometers from the FARC's mine. “We don’t control any territory out there; FARC controls it,” says Coronel Luis Montenegro, the National Police commander in Puerto Iririda.
