Amy, Your Thoughts on Detente?
Jimmy Carter invoked no less a global strategist than his 13-year-old daughter when answering a question on nuclear war during an October 1980 debate with Republican challenger Ronald Reagan. Carter had asked Amy to identify the most important issues confronting America. "She said she thought nuclear weaponry and the control of nuclear arms." Polls had shown the two tied six weeks before the election, though Reagan pulled ahead just before their one and only debate.
