Among the 29 tech CEOs who were hired from the outside, 55 percent had previously served as chief executives, while 34 percent had been vice presidents or senior vice presidents.
Yahoo was the most common prior company for these external hires, followed by Google, Apple, Microsoft, Walt Disney and Facebook. Those companies altogether accounted for 41 percent of the CEOs in this group.
By comparison, 33 percent of the outside hires at the Fortune 100 came from General Electric, McKinsey & Co. or the U.S. military, according to Russell Reynolds.
